We’ve all seen the devastating news of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Chile on February 27, 2010. You may not, however, be aware of the amount of materials used here in Kansas City that originates from the region.
Currently there are several manufacturers who are in the process of assessing damage and assisting their workers displaced or lost during the tragedy. Many are re-routing production capabilities due to lack of electrical power, damage to the country’s infrastructure, lack of communications and damage to the roads and ports to get in and out of the region.
Products with a South American origin affected:
- Pine lumber and mouldings
- MDF boards
- Pine Doors
- Plywood
We are currently in contact with each of our affected manufacturers and have increased our inventories of these items in anticipation of a possible shortage of supply. In addition to this shortfall, we will see pricing increases on these materials as inventory depletes domestically.
Our prayers go out to those affected by this tragedy and we will keep you updated as information continues to come out of the region.
