The Strategy Of Cornice Usage

Never underestimate the power of a cornice. Cornices have the ability to add architectural elements to a room with rather drab qualities. Cornices have the ability to stand alone over a window or just cover the curtain hardware of sheers and drapes. It’s a best-looking way to add softness to the hard rectangular lines of windows.

There are a couple different kinds of cornices you can roll with. A fabric covered cornice can be simple and slightly padded or come with a swag curtain. There are also wood cornices that are painted to spice up the color present in the room or even stained to match the built-ins.

Fabric-covered cornices instantly provide more color and texture to the room at hand. They manage to add movement and rhythm when one’s eyes travels around the room. Depending on the selection of fabric and trim, it can add a period feeling to the room. For example, a floral print or brocade with tassel trim would be perfect in an elegant period townhouse. Just getting a mere simple cotton and small print fabric would be an excellent addition to a farmhouse. The fabric cornices add warmth and charm to the room.

Wood cornices emulate an image of classical elegance and sophistication to a room when painted or stained. If you consider all the decorative elements, you can buy a prefabricated decorative molding to add to the cornice and give it even more appeal. A simple one-inch rope molding can be added to the base or even a three-inch piece of crown molding can be added to the top. The cornice will allow you to match details in existing furniture pieces to create some kind of harmony that may have been lacking previously. It can allow you to transform the room from simple to dramatic.

The cornices also have the ability to add some kind of symmetry to a room. It can be placed the same amount of inches from the ceiling around the room and hide the fact that your windows are not in uniform in their placement. Also, if the room is short in length, this can add a sense of elongation.

What about you, readers? What’s been your strategy when it comes to cornices?
